Caught Between Two Blackthornes: Brooke entered the Blackthornes’ world as a young makeup artist working on James Blackthorne’s film Angel Assassin. Despite their age difference, she and James fell in love and became engaged, provoking fierce resentment from his possessive daughter, Miranda. On the night before their wedding, a drunken Miranda accidentally struck Brooke with her car. The wedding faced another obstacle when Alex Reynolds uncovered that Brooke’s divorce from her first husband, Philip Whitacre, had never been finalized, making her marriage to James invalid.

Determined to correct the problem, Brooke traveled to the Dominican Republic for a quick divorce, accompanied by James’s nephew, Ethan. The attraction they had been fighting finally overwhelmed them, and they made love. The following day, Ethan was caught in a jeep explosion and presumed dead. James flew to the island to comfort Brooke but suffered a plane crash that left him with temporary amnesia. After Alex manipulated James into believing they were still married, a heartbroken Brooke returned to Los Angeles.

Brooke soon discovered that she was pregnant and reconciled with James, allowing him to believe the child was his even after Ethan unexpectedly returned alive. Winter Austen discovered a discarded letter identifying Ethan as the father and exposed the truth to James. Brooke fled before James could confront her, but eventually returned late in her pregnancy and continued insisting that James was the baby’s father. She and James remarried shortly before Brooke was kidnapped by Philip and taken to a cabin in Big Bear, where she gave birth to Michael during a severe snowstorm.

Brooke’s happiness was shattered when Michael disappeared from his nursery. The kidnapping left her increasingly isolated and obsessive, unable to trust anyone with her son. After discovering that Will Thomerson had arranged the abduction, Brooke found James’s gun and shot at him. Believing she had killed Will, she fled while James and Ethan attempted to conceal her involvement. Brooke was arrested for murder, but evidence later revealed that her shot had missed and that Heather Rydell had unknowingly fired the fatal bullet during a blackout.

Michael was eventually recovered, but the ordeal permanently damaged Brooke’s relationships with James and Ethan. She finally admitted that Ethan was Michael’s biological father, though she continued raising the child with James. Her marriage deteriorated further after Nathan Blackthorne attempted to rape her while James was away. When James refused to believe her and defended his uncle, Brooke took Michael and moved out. She later learned that James had been unfaithful with his old flame Leigh Purcell, widening the distance between them.

Despite years of secrecy and betrayal, Brooke and Ethan remained drawn to one another. When they finally prepared to leave Los Angeles together, tragedy struck during an earthquake. Ethan disappeared and was presumed dead, leaving Brooke to raise Michael while mourning the man she believed had been her true love. She later discovered that David Jennings was her half-brother, further expanding her complicated ties to the families surrounding the Blackthornes.

Brooke eventually became involved with Kyle Fenwick, a brooding stranger who reminded her of Ethan while carrying secrets of his own. Their relationship deepened as Kyle supported her through Michael’s behavioral problems and became involved with her business interests at Moonshadows. Brooke accompanied Kyle to Mexico during production of House of Palms, where a violent cartel attacked the film crew. She, Kyle, Stormy, and others were kidnapped and held captive at an abandoned sugar refinery. Kyle was shot while escaping to find help, and Brooke survived days of terror before being rescued.

What Brooke did not know was that Kyle had met Ethan in a New York prison and had been specifically asked to tell her that he was alive. Kyle concealed the truth and pursued Brooke instead. She eventually discovered that Kyle had also lied about being Will Thomerson’s son and had used the supposed family connection to enter her life. During their confrontation, Kyle fell onto a broken lamp and was critically injured, leading to Brooke’s arrest for attempted murder.

James traveled to New York and confirmed that the prisoner known as Dan Cody was Ethan. Brooke rushed to reunite with him but discovered that his years of amnesia, imprisonment, and resentment had changed him. After Ethan was released and returned to Los Angeles, Brooke moved into the Blackthorne mansion with Michael so father and son could become acquainted. Her reunion with Ethan remained volatile, while her lingering attraction to Kyle led her to sleep with him at Moonshadows.

Brooke and Ethan eventually reconciled, but their relationship continued to be tested by jealousy and distrust. Ethan became close to Kyle’s sister, Mackenzie Stone, while Brooke struggled to decide whether her future belonged with Ethan or Kyle. Her inability to completely let go of either man recreated the same emotional conflict that had once divided her between Ethan and James.

Brooke and Ethan were later united by another nightmare when Emmett Lawson kidnapped Michael to avenge the death of his daughter, Sophie. Emmett took the boy to the Hollywood sign and threatened to push him from the cliff, forcing Brooke and Ethan to relive the terror of nearly losing their son. After a prolonged confrontation, Ethan persuaded Emmett to release Michael. The grief-stricken man then plunged to his death.

Relieved that Michael was safe, Brooke and Ethan found comfort in one another and spent the night together. By morning, however, Ethan admitted that he remained in love with Mackenzie. Devastated that their reunion had not restored the family she wanted, Brooke took Michael and left the country, while Ethan moved to New York to pursue his relationship with Mackenzie.
