The Geologist Who Wanted a Larger Cut: Logan Mackenzie was the geologist hired by Congressman Seth Walker to survey the land surrounding Stratotech’s supposed oil venture in Costa Mesa. Although the company was presented to Alex Reynolds as a legitimate opportunity built around a valuable oil field, official surveys had already established that no oil existed beneath the property. Logan nevertheless became deeply involved in the operation and acquired a substantial financial stake in Stratotech.
His position gave him access to the truth behind the company. Stratotech was not an oil venture at all, but a front for an illegal arms-trafficking operation moving weapons to Panama and other destinations in Central America. With Blackthorne-Reynolds money secretly funding the project, Logan became one of the few people who understood both the fraud being committed against Alex and the criminal enterprise hidden beneath it.
Logan also appeared to know more than he admitted about the murder of Adrienne Fallmont, Seth’s former associate. After Adrienne was strangled, Leigh Purcell suspected Logan of killing her. Logan cryptically suggested that Adrienne had known too much and had threatened to contact the authorities, doing little to ease suspicions that he had either participated in her death or knew who had.
Rather than distance himself from the increasingly dangerous conspiracy, Logan attempted to profit from it. Believing his knowledge and importance entitled him to more, he confronted Seth and demanded a larger percentage of Stratotech. The demand made Logan another liability to a man who routinely eliminated anyone capable of exposing him.
Soon afterward, Logan was killed in a suspicious automobile crash on Pacific Coast Highway. His death frightened Alex, who began to fear that Seth would murder her as well. Although the crash appeared accidental, its timing strongly suggested that Seth had arranged it to silence Logan before he could reveal the truth or make further demands.
Logan continued to influence events after his death. Brett Armstrong searched his office and discovered surveillance footage taken from Adrienne’s home on the day of her murder. The recording showed Seth entering and leaving near the time she was killed. Brett used the evidence to blackmail Seth for a larger share of Stratotech’s profits and protection from suffering an “accident” like Logan’s.
