Fortune Beneath the Ruins: Mason arrived in Los Angeles as the unwelcome ex-husband of television producer Mackenzie Stone. Their marriage had ended badly, and Mackenzie wanted nothing to do with him when he reappeared and began forcing his way back into her life. When Mason’s harassment escalated, Ethan Blackthorne stepped in to defend her, immediately creating hostility between the two men.
Mason soon befriended Mackenzie’s brother, Kyle Fenwick. Both Mackenzie and Ethan distrusted the alliance, but Kyle remained unaware that Mason’s interest in him was connected to a much larger plan involving Moonshadows. Brooke and Kyle were overseeing an ambitious expansion of the resort’s marina, unaware that valuable oil reserves lay beneath the surrounding property. Mason intended to sabotage the project, bankrupt Moonshadows, and purchase the land at a fraction of its value.
Mason secretly recruited Moonshadows contractor Chip Matthews to sabotage the marina expansion from within. Chip was strongly attracted to Mason, and Mason knowingly encouraged that interest to secure his loyalty and cooperation, going as far as to let Chip perform oral sex on him.
When the project required a variance from the Coastal Commission, Mason targeted its chairman, married state senator Jim Nordquist. He arranged for Nordquist to be photographed with one of Miranda’s call girls and used the compromising pictures to blackmail him into approving the variance.
Mason’s sabotage became deadly when he contaminated the water at Moonshadows with arsenic. He intended only to frighten away guests and force the resort to close, but Brooke, a construction worker, and several visitors became seriously ill. After one guest died, Mason panicked but continued exploiting the tragedy. He persuaded the victim’s daughter to sue Moonshadows, and the resulting financial damage successfully forced the resort into bankruptcy.
With Moonshadows collapsing, Mason created the dummy corporation Loomis Enterprises and submitted a bid for the property. Mackenzie eventually discovered that he had bribed Senator Nordquist and confronted Kyle, believing her brother had knowingly helped Mason. Kyle denied any involvement, but their argument ended with Mackenzie falling from a cliff. Although Kyle initially fled, he later reported the accident anonymously.
The true power behind Mason’s scheme was Jackie Blackthorne, who had secretly financed the operation and intended to profit from the oil beneath Moonshadows. Once the water contamination became public and the conspiracy began unraveling, Jackie distanced herself from Mason. She arrived in Los Angeles, condemned the scandal before the press, and arranged for him to bear full responsibility for the crimes they had planned together.
Mason was arrested while Jackie retained control of the property through her financial influence. His elaborate scheme had succeeded in destroying Moonshadows, but the oil fortune he expected never materialized. When drilling permits were denied and the threatened publicity became too damaging, Jackie donated the land to the government, leaving Mason imprisoned for a conspiracy from which his wealthier partner escaped largely untouched.
