Calm under pressure and already developing the instincts of a physician, Van became unexpectedly involved in the turmoil surrounding the younger Hollywood set after Benji Rydell accidentally shot Blake Distefano at the Viper Room. Rather than risk drawing police or unwanted attention to the incident, Van treated Blake privately and stitched the wound himself.
